A pre-operative evaluation, also known as a pre-op exam, is an important step before undergoing surgery. This visit helps ensure that you are medically prepared for your procedure and reduces the risk of complications during and after surgery.
At PrimeDoc, we provide comprehensive pre-operative evaluations at our Buckhead, Atlanta location. Please note that pre-operative exams must be completed in person and cannot be conducted via telemedicine.
What Is a Pre-Operative Evaluation?
A pre-operative evaluation is a medical assessment performed before surgery. It is almost always requested by surgeons to make sure that patients are fit for the procedure. The purpose of this visit is to review your medical history, assess your current health status, and identify any potential risks related to anesthesia or the surgical procedure.
Pre-operative evaluations are typically completed within 7 to 30 days prior to surgery, depending on your surgeon’s or surgical facility’s requirements. We recommend scheduling your appointment as soon as your procedure is confirmed to help avoid delays. Please note that laboratory results can take up to one week (although they are often available within a few days). We recommend planning your pre-surgical evaluation in advance to help avoid cancellation or rescheduling of your procedure.
Your provider will communicate relevant findings with your surgical team to help ensure a safe and successful procedure.
What to Expect During Your Pre-Op Visit
During your in-person appointment, your provider may:
- Review your medical history and current medications
- Perform a physical examination
- Check vital signs
- Order laboratory tests, EKG, or imaging studies if required by your surgeon
- Provide medical clearance for surgery
It is important to bring any required paperwork from your surgeon, as well as a list of medications you are currently taking. For certain lab tests, fasting for 8-12 hours may be necessary.
